Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has expressed his unwavering support for the five traffic wardens who were shot during a violent encounter at the Daveyton railway station on Sunday morning.

The group of wardens came under fire while attempting to search approximately twelve individuals, with the assailants reportedly using high-calibre weapons, including an AK-47 rifle and a pistol.

According to Ofentse Morwane, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Community Safety, two female and three male wardens were injured in this tragic incident and are currently receiving medical attention in hospital.

In a demonstration of solidarity, Lesufi visited the victims at Alberton Netcare Hospital on Monday afternoon.

While at the hospital, Lesufi provided an update on the conditions of the wardens. He stated that one of the two injured wardens in the intensive care unit remains in critical condition, whereas the other, a female officer, is recovering well. “She is conscious, and we managed to exchange greetings and to indicate our support,” Lesufi remarked. He also noted that the other two wardens are on the mend and expected to be discharged soon.

Meanwhile, the driver, who sustained a bullet wound to his shoulder, has been discharged. Lesufi stated that the driver has been advised to rest until recalled for bullet removal, underscoring the continuous medical attention provided to the wardens.

Lesufi vowed that such acts of violence would not deter their commitment to law enforcement. “Any form of violence, intimidation, or interference with the work of our officers is unacceptable, and it will not be tolerated,” he declared.

Following the incident, a case of attempted murder has been opened with the South African Police Service. Lesufi confirmed that authorities are collaborating closely with law enforcement agencies to apprehend the suspects and ensure they face justice.

“This incident serves as a testament to the determination of certain individuals to perpetrate violence throughout Gauteng,” he added.

In a show of solidarity, the Premier commended the bravery of the injured wardens and expressed his well wishes for their recovery.

“I wish for a speedy recovery for our brave traffic wardens and extend my thoughts and prayers to their families during this difficult time,” he said, highlighting the emotional toll this violent encounter has taken on the victims and their families.

Lesufi added that as the investigation unfolds, the focus will remain on bringing the culprits to justice and ensuring the safety of law enforcement personnel across Gauteng.
