Five suspected criminals were killed in a shootout with police in an informal settlement in  Chatsworth on Monday morning.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said the suspects were wanted in connection with multiple crimes, including murder, house robberies, extortion, and possession of unlicensed firearms

“These crimes were committed in Mpumalanga township, Mariannhill, KwaNdengezi, and Umsunduzi,” Netshiunda said.

He said intelligence gathering led police to the suspects’ hideout spot at the Pump House informal settlement

“When police announced their arrival, the suspects started spraying a hail of bullets towards police officers, and a shootout ensued. During the shootout, five suspects were shot and fatally wounded. No police officer sustained any injury during the shootout,” Netshiunda said.

The suspects are believed to be between the ages of 17 and early to mid-20s.

Police also seized three firearms, one of them a homemade gun, in the possession of the suspects.
