The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has confirmed the deaths of two trainee candidates who were participating in the department’s recent recruitment and selection process.

The deaths occurred after the JMPD began its physical assessments on August, 25.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said Marvellous Michael Nyambi, 24, from Rabie Ridge, became ill from heat exhaustion while taking part in the selection programme on Thursday, 28 August, at the Ruimsig Stadium.

“He was immediately attended to by Emergency Management Services personnel and was later transported to Yusuf Dadoo Hospital for further treatment,” said Fihla.

“Sadly, Mr Nyambi passed away on Friday, August, 29.”

Fihla confirmed that another trainee, Zwelethu Tekete, 26, from Braamfischerville Phase 1, also died during the programme.

“On Monday, 1 September, during the recruitment process at the stadium, he was brought into the stadium unresponsive,” Fihla said.

“Emergency Management Services (EMS) officers on site immediately initiated CPR, but unfortunately, their attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. Mr Tekete was declared deceased at the scene.”

The JMPD extended its condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of both trainees.

“The well-being and safety of all candidates and officers remain our top priority,” said Fihla.

The JMPD is currently in the process of recruiting 500 new trainees for its next intake, set to begin in 2026.

Applicants will undergo 18 months of intensive training at the JMPD Training Academy.

“On completion, they might be considered for appointment as fully fledged JMPD officers,” Fihla previously said.

During the training period, trainees will receive a stipend in accordance with the City’s policy, and will be subject to training contracts, Academy rules and the RTMC training policy.

“Due to the intensive recruitment process, Metro Police training is expected to commence on January 1, 2026,” added Fihla.
