A Gauteng police officer has been denied bail in the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court after he was charged with murder.

Lieutenant Colonel Martin Wayne Ellapen, 56, who was stationed at the Moroka police station, shot and killed his brother-in-law, Ansley Jordaan, on Friday, August 8.

The matter is currently being investigated by the police watchdog, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid).

According to the spokesperson for the Ipid, Lizzy Suping, the police officer was arguing with his brother-in-law, who allegedly wanted to strike him with a bottle.

“On the day of the incident, the accused (Lieutenant Colonel Ellapen) visited the deceased and his wife. Ellapen allegedly took out his private firearm and fired two shots in the direction of Jordaan. Jordaan tried to run away but collapsed in the street,” Shuping said.

The brother-in-law was declared dead on the scene by medical personnel. Ellapen was arrested on the same day as the murder and was detained at the Kliptown police station.

With his bail denied, the matter was postponed until October 20 for further investigation.
