The Hawks have appealed to anyone with credible information to come forward to assist in their investigation into an attack on law enforcement officers in Ngangelizwe, Eastern Cape.

The Public Servants Association (PSA) has condemned the attack, warning that the incident is not isolated but part of a disturbing and escalating pattern of targeted violence against police across South Africa.

The association called for the Eastern Cape provincial commissioner to act decisively and demanded arrests be made swiftly.

The two officers were shot while returning home from duty on Wednesday afternoon. One officer was killed, and another remains in a critical condition.

Police confirmed the case has since been taken over by the Hawks.

Hawks spokesperson warrant officer Ndimphiwe Mhlakuvana said all leads were being followed.

"The Hawks are appealing to anyone (with) credible information to assist our investigation. The situation around the hospitalised officer is still critical," he said.

The PSA called for a dedicated provincial task team to take over the investigation, saying immediate intervention is required to restore confidence and protect officers.

“This team must have the capacity to identify and dismantle the network behind this attack. The state must act decisively and show control over criminal activity.”

The association described the shooting as a coordinated ambush and direct attack on the authority of the state.

“The way the perpetrators operated, in broad daylight, reflects growing lawlessness amongst criminals.

"The safety of law enforcement officers faces serious threats. This incident reflects a wider pattern of targeted violence against police officials across South Africa.”

According to the PSA, between April 2023 and March 2024, 39 officers were murdered. In the first three months of 2025, eleven officers were killed in Gauteng.

“Recent 2026 data indicate an increase in attacks on police officials. The Eastern Cape remains a high-risk area where gangs and organised crime target police officers,” it continued.

“The PSA extends condolences to the family of the deceased officer and wishes the injured officer a full recovery. The loss and injury of officers in the line of duty demands a firm response from the state. The PSA will not accept a situation where members operate under constant threat."
