Police are investigating attempted murder following the shooting of a bread delivery driver in Kraaifontein.
The incident occurred at about 9.30am on Tuesday in Basakabini Crescent, Wallacedene.
It follows a similar case in Khayelitsha last Friday, when two spaza shop workers were shot dead in an ambush as they unloaded a bread delivery truck.
CCTV footage of the Kraaifontein incident has been shared widely on social media and crime WhatsApp groups.
In it, the delivery truck pulls up in front of a shop and the driver’s assistants carry a crate of loaves into the store.
But as the two men get back into the truck, two suspects come running around a corner and one fires bullets into the driver’s window.
Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said officers responded to reports of a shooting but found that the victim had already been rushed to the hospital.
“He was delivering bread when five unidentified males (suspects) approached him and robbed him. In the process, he was shot in the face," Van Wyk said.
Police confirmed that a case of attempted murder is under investigation.
Kraaifontein Community Police Forum chairperson, Mawethu Sila, said the forum had not yet received a full briefing on the incident. He encouraged community members to assist the police with information.
“All criminals come out of houses. If the community does not stand up, there is nothing that the police can do to stop these shootings.
“Community members would just keep quiet; as a result, the perpetrators would think they have a licence to kill and rob other people," Sila added.
Another delivery driver was shot and killed in Wallacedene on January 24, at around 5.50am in Boesak Road.
