THE crew aboard the triumphant Cape2Rio sailing vessel Angel Wings which sank after suffering a dismasting, have expressed their deep relief and gratitude to be safely home.
The Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC) on Friday confirmed that following the safe rescue of the three crew - Sibusiso Sizatu, Tshepo Renaldo Mohale and Andrea Myburg - by the Motor Vessel (MV) Bryant, further coordinated efforts have ensured their swift and secure return to South Africa.
The vessel suffered a dismasting approximately 900 miles South-East of Rio de Janeiro on their return passage to Cape Town.
Bulk carrier, the MV Bryant was diverted to assist and standby.
“The decision to abandon Angel Wings was made in consultation with the Master of the MV Bryant, considering the complete loss of all spars that could have been used to set up a jury rig and deteriorating weather conditions, (20-25kts with 4-5m waves),” the RCYC said at the time.
The distance from safe harbour and the notorious unpredictability of the South Atlantic weather led to the final call of crew uplift and vessel abandonment.
On Friday, the RCYC said once the South African Navy was informed of the situation, they promptly offered to intercept the MV Bryant as she continued her voyage around Cape Horn toward Singapore.
“With the cooperation and permission of the vessel’s master and agent, the Navy coordinated a successful rendezvous approximately 60 nautical miles south of Cape Point.”
A favourable weather window enabled the Navy to launch an inflatable boat and facilitate a safe transfer of the sailors to SAS Adam Kok III, commanded by Commander Lindeni Jane Xakane.
The crew spent the night on board before being safely transferred to another naval vessel for the final leg of their journey to Simon’s Town.
“A contingency from the RCYC, including Club Commodore David Garrard, was invited to join the Navy operation and was honoured to welcome the sailors back on home soil," the RCYC said.
“The RCYC extends its sincere appreciation to the master, crew and owners of the MV Bryant for their decisive intervention, warm hospitality and professionalism throughout the rescue period.
“We are equally grateful to the South African Navy for their swift response, generosity of spirit and unwavering commitment to bringing our sailors home safely.”
