The incident was reported at around 6.30am on Wednesday at a premises in Shire Street, Extension 6. A man and a woman were declared dead on the scene and four other victims taken to a medical facility for treatment.
The victims were between the ages of 19 and 49 years old.
Police spokesperson FC Van Wyk said Mfuleni Saps are investigating two counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder.
“Circumstances surrounding a shooting incident early (Wednesday) morning at about 6.30am at a premises in Shire Street, Ext 6, Mfuleni, in which two persons were shot and fatally wounded and four others injured are under investigation.
“According to reports SAPS members on duty received a complainant from radio control of a shooting at the mentioned address.
“On their arrival at the scene they were pointed out the bodies of two people that were shot. All the injured people were taken to two nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
“The motive for this incident is believed to be gang related. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.”
Mfuleni Community Police Forum spokesperson Mvano Magula condemned the shootings, saying it was easy for crime to take place as there was little police visibility.
Magula explained: “The shooting is gang-related and linked to extortion and drug cartels…
“They were attacking each other in the street when the shooting was reported.
"Mfuleni is a big area and only has one van to cover the whole area, and in that area where the shooting took place, there is not enough police visibility.”
Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile application MySAPS anonymously.
