Two police officers injured after 'speeding' taxi crashes into SAPS van in Gugulethu

POLICE are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving after a police van was involved in a head-on collision with an alleged speeding taxi, injuring two officers.

The officers were transported to a medical facility for treatment.

The multi-vehicle accident took place along Klipfontein Road in NY108 Gugulethu around 6.45am on Sunday.

It is alleged that the taxi overtook two vehicles at a high speed before crashing into the SAPS van.

Images have surfaced online showing the front of the police van and taxi smashed as authorities responded to the scene.

According to reports, the taxi driver was the only occupant inside the vehicle and managed to survive the ordeal with minor injuries.

Police spokesperson FC van Wyk confirmed that the matter is under investigation and no arrests have been made yet.

Van Wyk said: “Gugulethu police registered a reckless and negligent driving case for investigation following an accident involving a police vehicle and taxi on Sunday, 11 January at 6:45.

“According to reports the accident happened along Klipfontein Road in NY 108, when a Toyota Quantum Taxi overtook two vehicles at high speed, and collided with the SAPS vehicle. 

"Both members in the police vehicle sustained injuries and were transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment. No arrest yet, investigations continue.”

The Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) said they were aware of the incident, but not sure which organisation the driver is associated with.

The Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association, Nceba Enge said the driver does not belong to their organisation.
