As the new school year approaches, the Haven Outreach organisation is stepping up to address the back-to-school needs of 50 families in Manenberg.
With the pressing demand for essential stationery items, the local organisation aims to make a significant impact by filling between 50 and 100 backpacks with necessary school supplies for children in need.
Each backpack will include essential school supplies such as pens, coloured pencils, pencil bags, plastic files, crayons, rulers, erasers, glue and more.
“We work with children in our youth programme and live in the community, so we see the need every day. Back-to-school costs are a huge burden for families here, adding stress to parents in an area where poverty is high and crime is rife,” said Tyrese Jones, from Haven Outreach.
He explained that not having the essentials they needed for school had a big impact on the confidence and self-esteem of children. During the year, they also run soup kitchens and initiatives to provide sanitary pads to girls.
“For January, our focus is on stationery, one of the most expensive school essentials for parents, especially at a time when many are struggling financially. We want to help ease that burden. Every child deserves the tools they need to learn, and we want them to feel proud and excited on their first day back at school.”
As part of the outreach programme, Haven Outreach is also highlighting the significance of education within the community, inspiring children and parents alike to prioritise academic success. By alleviating some of the financial stress surrounding back-to-school preparations, the organisation aims to encourage a positive mindset towards learning and aspiration.
“Sometimes not having the basics discourages children from going to school and that’s something we want to prevent if we can. Education is vital, and children need positive role models.”
The organisation is appealing for support from the public to help make the initiative a success. Donations can include stationery items or monetary contributions. For more information, Haven Outreach can be contacted on thehavenoutreach@gmail.com or 081 782 3038.
