UMKHONTO weSizwe Party (MKP) Convener Willies Mchunu has issued a stern warning against ill-discipline by disgruntled party members looking to oust him, saying protesting against a leader is tantamount to protesting against the organisation.

Mchunu confirmed that he was aware some members had come to the MKP office to complain about him.

“I do not know the source of their complaints, as they did not engage with me regarding their issues.”

Sources within the party said Mchunu has been a target since he took over the position. This campaign is said to have intensified after he introduced strict governance controls that eliminated any abuse of party resources.

“I would not want to speak of the speculation out there as to what is going on, but I am aware that there have been meetings where I was discussed. I was not part of those meetings, so I cannot speak as to what was said. I am also aware that some people had come to protest at the MKP offices complaining about me. I do not know what their complaints about me were. But I would say it would have been better if they had first engaged the matter in a meeting before protesting. Protesting against a leader is tantamount to protesting against the organisation,” said Mchunu.

Some MK Party members have stated that since Mchunu took over, there has been a campaign to have him removed from his post. One member said Mchunu became a target.

“The party received funds, but they were not managed properly. Previous leaders were doing as they pleased. Finally, when Willies came in, he introduced stability and strict financial control, which then curbed the abuse of funds. This is one of the reasons that people are upset with him, as they no longer have uncontrolled, unlimited access to party funds. They want to revive the situation where they were doing as they pleased with party funding.”

It was also alleged that another issue is that these individuals oppose Mchunu eyeing the eThekwini municipality.
