The City of Cape Town has called on the public to come forward with any information on an incident where traffic officers came under fire while pursuing suspects possibly linked to a shooting incident at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court.
Two officers were on Wednesday patrolling in the area when they witnessed an armed man run towards a vehicle and fleeing the scene.
A chase ensued through Athlone, in the direction of Langa. As officers tried to cut off the vehicle, the occupants opened fire on them, resulting in an exchange of gunfire, mayco member for safety and security JP Smith said.

“We applaud the officers for their bravery and are grateful they were not harmed. Our Safety and Security Investigations Unit (SSIU) is working very closely with SAPS on this matter, and pursuing all leads,” said Smith.
The suspects are wanted on charges of attempted murder, reckless and negligent driving and malicious damage to property.
