THE Hawks have arrested one of their own and a Tembisa Hospital official over corruption after allegedly attempting to bribe a Hawks investigator with about R100 000 in cash on Sunday.
“It is alleged that on Friday, 21 November 2025, a DPCI (Hawks) officer was approached by a 41-year-old suspect, a Sergeant from the DPCI. The Sergeant informed the officer that a 53-year-old Tembisa Hospital official wanted to meet regarding an ongoing investigation linked to the hospital. The Sergeant further indicated that the hospital official required assistance and was willing to offer gratification in order to avoid prosecution in the ongoing investigation,” said Hawks spokesperson Thandi Mbambo.
The meeting between the Hawks member, the Tembisa Hospital official and the investigator took place on Sunday. Mbambo said it was during this meeting that the investigator was given more than R100 000 cash as gratification.
“An operation authorised by the Director of Public Prosecutions was subsequently executed by the DPCI’s Serious Corruption Investigation unit leading to the arrest of both the Sergeant and the Tembisa Hospital official,” said Mbambo.
Reacting to the arrests, Hawks Acting National Head Siphosihle Nkosi said: “We assure the public that investigations relating to corruption at Tembisa Hospital will continue without deterrence. We also emphasise that those within the DPCI who involve themselves in criminal activities will be rooted out of the organisation.”
The arrests come as calls mount for the Department of Health to help fast-track the blacklisting of companies linked to the looting of more than R2 billion from that health facility.
Among the syndicates at the centre of the looting saga were President Cyril Ramaphosa’s nephew Hangwani Maumela from a previous marriage and controversial tenderpreneur Vusimuzi Cat Matlala was also implicated.
The Hawks member and the hospital official are expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
