INCREASED security measures have been put in place at Milnerton High School following a bullying incident involving several pupils that went viral on social media last week.

The video, which saw a grade 10 boy being assaulted by a group of older pupils, sparked widespread outrage. Six pupils were charged with assault in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court and released on R2000 bail.

Tensions erupted outside Milnerton High School last week when police fired stun grenades to disperse protesters demanding justice for the pupil.

School Principal Gert JP van Tonder on Wednesday said school activity would proceed as normal, with “additional security measures remaining in place in coordination with the SAPS and local law enforcement to ensure the safety of all learners and the smooth running of the matric examinations”.

Van Tonder confirmed that additional videos and incidents had emerged and internal investigations were ongoing.

“Further incidents and videos have come to light and are receiving our full, urgent attention in line with the applicable codes, policies and regulations. No effort is being spared to ensure that appropriate action is taken to hold those responsible accountable, while protecting the rights, safety and well-being of all affected learners.”

The principal said the incidents of violence had shaken confidence in the safety of the school’s learning environment.

“This is a painful moment for everyone connected to Milnerton High School. Please know that we share your distress and that we are dealing with this matter with the utmost seriousness, compassion and care.”

He said the School Governing Body and the school leadership had initiated “discussions and wider consultation regarding a comprehensive response plan for safety, discipline and positive behavioural support at our school”.

“This inquiry will assess the need for partnerships with external experts, WCED specialists, and non-governmental organisations focused on restorative education, to help us build a culture of empathy, non-violence and conflict resolution across the school. We are also investigating an anonymous digital reporting tool, allowing learners to safely share concerns about bullying or other harmful behaviour.“Counselling and psychological support have been made available, to any learners directly or indirectly affected by the incident. The SGB and School Management are working closely with professionals to ensure that every young person involved receives the help they need.

“We understand that words alone cannot undo the harm or restore trust. That will take time, transparency and consistent action. We are fully committed to this work. Together, as parents, educators, and learners, we will build a culture defined by kindness, respect and integrity. Fear and violence have no place at Milnerton High School.”
