In anticipation of matric valedictory celebrations, pupils have been urged to do so safely and within the parameters of the law.
Mayco member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said they were on alert as the school term winds down.
“Every year, we see large gatherings at our public open spaces, beaches, and party hubs like Long Street as learners mark the end of their school careers before the final exams.
“While we congratulate our Grade 12s on this important milestone, the City does want to remind them to behave responsibly at all times, and to be mindful of the law, but also those around them,” said Smith.
The public is reminded that the possession and consumption of alcohol in public spaces and on beaches is prohibited in terms of the City's by-laws.
Smith said anyone transgressing the by-laws will be fined R500 and have their alcohol confiscated.
“It is also against the law to drink and drive, so make sure that you have a reliable designated driver.
“The City's enforcement services will increase patrols and vehicle checkpoints on routes in the vicinity of beaches and other popular venues in the CBD. However, I appeal to learners to work with us by obeying the rules and by not allowing a good time to be sullied by poor decisions,” said Smith.
In the event of an emergency, call the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700.
