In a significant breakthrough, a multidisciplinary team from the Hawks has arrested three suspects, aged between 19 and 25, in connection with the murder of Wynberg Saps' Sergeant Lulama Njobeni.

The arrests were made following an investigative operation with collaborative efforts of the Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, the Provincial Commissioner Serious and Violent Crime unit, the Taxi unit, the Extortion team, and the POCC combat team.

On May 30 this year, Njobeni, aged 48, was shot and killed outside his home on Thys Witbooi Street in Vrygrond, Muizenberg.

At the time of the attack, he was in uniform and en route to begin his shift.

According to reports, the sergeant sustained fatal gunshot wounds, which sent shockwaves through the local community and drew outrage from fellow officers.

The investigation into his murder was swiftly launched, with the Hawks following various leads that ultimately led to the apprehension of the suspects in Muizenberg.

Acting Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in the Western Cape, Brigadier Mushavhaduvha Ramovha, commended the team for their relentless pursuit of justice.

“We will leave no stone unturned until we bring the cop killers to book,” he said, adding that the dedication shown by the investigating team was commendable and vital in securing the arrests.

The trio is scheduled to appear for the first time on Wednesday at the Muizenberg District Court, facing murder charges.
