Lavender Hill grandmother's killer sentenced to 23 years

THE convicted killer of a Lavender Hill grandmother has been sentenced to 23 years behind bars. 

The Daily Voice reported Charlene Josephs (Overmeyer) was kidnapped from her St Montaque Village home by three masked men at gunpoint on July 10, last year.

The 57-year-old was found 40 days later behind the municipal landfill site in Muizenberg by police.

Charles Williams, 51, and two others, Farried Williams, 23, and 31-year-old Jason Arendse were later arrested. 

And according to police, Williams was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for murder, five years for kidnapping and three years for defeating the ends of justice by the Khayelitsha Priority Court this week.

SAPS spokesperson Anelisiwe Manyana said: “The Provincial Organised Crime Investigation, Anti Kidnapping Task Team was activated for the investigation of this matter and 40 days later the body of the victim was discovered in a shallow grave in Xakabuntu, Vrygrond, Muizenberg.

“Three suspects namely, Farried Williams, Charles Williams, and Jason Arendse, were later arrested and positively linked to the kidnapping, murder of the victim and for defeating the ends of justice.

“The suspects were charged and brought before the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ on several occasions and their bail was successfully opposed. The matter was then escalated to the Khayelitsha Priority court."

On Tuesday, the charges were withdrawn against accused one and accused three. 

“Accused number two, Charles Williams, was found guilty on all charges,” Manyana said.
