Daycare centre’s staff fear for their safety after another robbery

EDUCATORS at Luthando Day Care in Gugulethu say they fear for their safety as the centre has once again been burgled and vandalised.

Teacher Khuthala Moyakhe said staff were disheartened and scared as it was not the first time criminals targeted the facility.

“We don’t know why these people are doing this to us. We’ve just recently received donations from SaUnite, as last month the same thing happened and we lost everything. What breaks our hearts is the donations we received, now they are gone.”

On Saturday, staff were shocked to see windows were broken and once again food and other items missing.

“Ourselves and the children are no longer safe, as the perpetrators keep on returning and destroying the centre. This place is for children, we just want them to stop what they are doing,” she said.

Moyakhe said they reported last month’s robbery but they had now lost all hope in police and did not report the latest incident.

“We are still waiting for the last incident to be investigated and for fingerprint experts to arrive, to date they have not. We don’t know what to do any more.”

Bongani Mjandana, whose children attend the centre, said they were being robbed of their education.

“All of my children attended Luthando Day Care and it is very good with children. Two of my children are now in primary and the other two still attend daycare .

“Our worst fear is that the daycare might close down as the principal and staff fear for their lives. Where are (the children) going to learn as their place of learning has been vandalised?.

“The daycare looks after our children while we’re at work.” said Mjandana.

Police did not respond to questions about last month’s robbery.
