THE FW de Klerk Foundation has distanced itself from reports that the last apartheid president’s health “is rapidly deteriorating”.
Media reports were doing the rounds this week stated the 85-year-old’s health was declined. De Klerk was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, in March.
The foundation said the reports were not true, adding that there has been “no discernible deterioration” in De Klerk’s health since he was diagnosed.
“There have been extensive media reports that Mr De Klerk’s health ‘is rapidly deteriorating’. This is not so. There has been no discernible deterioration in his health since he was diagnosed in March with mesothelioma.”
He was considering the continuation of the course of immunotherapy that he has been following for the past two months.
“Mr De Klerk attended a meeting of the FW de Klerk Foundation Board on Monday – and comes into his office three or four times a week.”
The foundation said that as Covid-19 regulations permitted, De Klerk and his wife, Elita, hoped to travel to Greece for a holiday.
