EDUCATORS at Luthando Day Care in Gugulethu fear for their lives after thieves broke into the facility, vandalising burglar bars, ceiling, kitchen cupboards and toilets and stole all the children's food.
Educator Khuthala Moyakhe said this was not the first time vandals targeted the facility and they don't feel safe.
“These guys might come back and rob us whilst we are inside. They’ve broken into the crèche before and took some items. We are now shocked that they've done this again.
“We are not safe as the workers and the children especially that winter is approaching. If we had a strong fence and gate, we would feel safe.
“I was alerted on Sunday morning by a neighbouring church’s caretaker that our crèche had been vandalised and items were stolen. I was shocked and could not believe all the children's food was missing as well as other items,” she said.
These included electrical cables.
“We now have to go around asking the community to assist us as we don’t have sponsors.”
Moyakhe said police were alerted to the incident.
“We are still waiting for the fingerprint experts to conduct their investigations. I’m feeling frustrated as we cannot work when we’re feeling unsafe. We cannot stay in an untidy place with children. So we decided to start cleaning and we are not even sure if the experts will arrive,” she said.
Police spokesperson Andre Traut said no one has been arrested yet.
