Cape Town – Traffic officers arrested 88 motorists and issued just over 2 000 fines in the last week.

A total of 71 arrests were for driving under the influence of alcohol, with 27 arrests at a single roadblock in Wynberg on Friday evening, the City of Cape Town said. Officers also arrested 13 drivers who had outstanding warrants.

In recent days there have been at least two fatal collisions that have claimed five lives. Indications at this stage are that speed played a role in both incidents.

As we head into the festive season, Cape Town Traffic reminds road users to steer clear of drinking and driving as well as texting and driving, to obey the speed limits and to wear their seatbelts at all times.

Meanwhile, City Law Enforcement made 27 arrests and issued 2 758 fines over the past few days.

On  November 18, officers impounded 2 vehicles in separate dumping incidents on the corners of Govan Mbeki and Swartklip roads in the Mandalay area.

The drivers of these vehicles were caught dumping rubble on public open space. They were both fined.

On Wednesday, officers impounded another two vehicles for dumping offences – one at Baden Powell and Spine roads and another one on Duinefontein Road in Philippi.

On Thursday at Lentegeur Sports Field in Mitchells Plain, another driver was fined for dumping and his vehicle impounded.

A total of five vehicles were impounded. The drivers' fines and impoundment fees amount to a combined total of R62 500.

Illegal dumping remains a huge problem and Law Enforcement will continue to give no quarter in the drive to eradicate this problem.
