Cape Town - Police are hunting for three men who walked into the Taj Hotel in Cape Town on Monday and fled with thousands of rands in cash.

A source close to the investigation told the Daily Voice that at least R300 000 was stolen when hotel employees were held up.

Neither the hotel management or police would confirm the amount of cash that was stolen.

Western Cape police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana says: “At about 2.20pm [on Monday] a business robbery was perpetrated in a hotel in Cape Town.

“According to a witness, three unidentified suspects entered the hotel and threatened the employees.

“Suspects fled the scene on foot with [an] undisclosed amount of money. No one has been arrested as yet.”

Willie Williams, Director of Sales and Marketing at the Taj Hotel, declined to comment.

The hotel made headlines on New Year’s Eve, when it emerged that they had asked the City of Cape Town to get the Malay Choirs to not sing when they walk past the building in Wale Street.

General Manager of the hotel, Michael Pownall, had written to the mayoral committee member for Tourism and Events, Gareth Bloor, asking that they consider the guests sleeping at the hotel.

Pownall later apologised for making the request.
