A VILLIERSDORP farmer is in a stable but serious condition in hospital after being assaulted in his house early yesterday morning.

Danie du Toit, 80, and his wife Maartie, 78, were asleep when four men came in through a window at about 1am yesterday.

They tied up Danie with electrical cords and hit him over the head with a rifle.

The blow was so hard that the butt broke off.

The robbers blindfolded and tied Maartie with shoelaces and covered her with a blanket.

She had recently been released from hospital and is in a frail condition.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said the suspects took five firearms, wine, a television set and jewellery.

Their son

Gerard said his father had bleeding on the brain.
