ONE of South Africa’s most loved comics, published daily in several newspapers, including the Cape Times, is now available as a collection, and for a good cause.

The Treknet duo, Dave Gomersall and Gavin Thompson, have over the last 10 years created nearly 3 000 comic strips, of which about 2 500 have been published in several newspapers in South Africa, Namibia and Norway.

The strip has been published in the Cape Times for about seven years.

Treknet, inspired by the fishermen of Fish Hoek, features two friends, Boet and John in comic situations reflecting talking points in South Africa and the world.

Gomersall said the book, The Tales of Treknet, costs R49.

It will be on sale at several stores across the city as a collection of published works.

“Over the years we have had a lot of fun translating talking points and topical issues into the Treknet series. It was inspired by fishermen who came in and out of the Fish Hoek with their catch every day.

“For that reason, we have decided that R10 of every sale will go to Sanccob (the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds). Sanccob plays an important role in saving and protecting threatened seabirds and other wildlife,” said Gomersall.

The book will be launched at Café Pescado’s in Simon’s Town on Thursday, October 1.
