THE Transformation and Anti-racism Rugby Committee (Tarc) has sent condolences to the family of former South African Rugby Union deputy president Mike Stofile, who died on Sunday.

The committee has described Stofile as a stalwart of the struggle to transform rugby in South Africa.

Stofile died at Port Elizabeth’s Greenacres Hospital after a long illness.

Tarc secretary Asad Bhorat said the role Stofile played in rugby was huge and influential.

“His immense effort at transforming rugby made him many enemies with those who resisted change. Mr Stofile never let this deter his efforts… This is the time to call for unity to all those involved in pushing for change in rugby,” he said.

He believed the the current state that rugby finds itself in would have benefited from Stofile’s leadership.
