A MAN in his twenties was killed in the early hours yesterday when his car left the N2 near Langa and crashed into a canal next to Bhunga Avenue.
City Traffic Services spokeswoman Maxine Jordaan said the man died on impact. He has not been identified.
A pedestrian discovered him, she said.
Peak-hour traffic was reduced to a snail’s pace as the left lane of the N2 had to be closed, causing motorists to experience delays.
Traffic was also backed up on nearby roads like Jan Smuts Drive.
“The man was found in a canal in a Toyota Sedan and we suspect the accident was caused by speeding,” Jordaan said.
According to ER24 spokesman Pieter Rossouw, the driver lost control of the car and drove into the canal, which contained dirty water.
“When ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene, they found that the driver had already suffered fatal injuries to the head and abdomen.
“Rescue teams were also dispatched to assist in extricating the driver from the vehicle using special equipment, as the water in the canal is toxic,” Rossouw said.
Meanwhile, Al-Ameen Kafaar, spokesman for the provincial Department of Transport and Public Works, said that 10 people had been killed on the province’s roads at the weekend.
Close to 3 000 vehicles were stopped at 26 roadblocks
, he said.
“A total of 5 957 vehicles were screened for speeding, of which 490 speeding offences were recorded,” Kafaar said.
“For traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness, 245 fines were issued to the amount of R344 050.”
Kafaar said 179km/h was the highest speed that was recorded in a 120km/h zone on the N1, near Brackenfell.
On the N7, in the Vredenburg area, traffic officials recorded a driver speeding at 143km/h in a 100km/h zone, he said.
