NEARLY 200 high schools across the Western Cape will offer classes for pupils over the winter holidays, which start tomorrow.
“Providing curriculum support to our Grade 12 learners is always a priority, particularly in schools where learners are struggling in specific subjects. During the upcoming holidays, the Western Cape Education Department has organised holiday study programmes at 166 of our high schools,” said Education MEC Debbie Schafer today.
She was speaking at a joint media briefing with her Social Development, Cultural Affairs and Sport, and Community Safety counterparts.
Schafer said the winter schools would aim to assist pupils in high enrolment subjects, including maths, science, geography, life sciences, accounting and economics.
“Many of the programmes on offer will be taught by tutors selected by the provincial department. In some schools, curriculum advisors will be supporting and assisting individual school programmes. Additional resource materials have been developed to complement the lessons being presented.”
She said the dates of each school’s programme would be different.
This was one of several initiates announced which were intended to ensure young people were kept safe during the holidays.
Others included sport and cultural activities, entrepreneurial skills development sessions, and movie screenings.
