Johannesburg -

Former National Youth Development Agency chairman Andile Lungisa could become the first ANC member to appear before the party’s integrity committee.

Eastern Cape provincial ANC spokesman Mlibo Qoboshiyane said the party would definitely refer Lungisa to the integrity committee.

Lungisa is also a provincial executive committee member of the Eastern Cape ANC.

The ANC established the integrity committee after the Mangaung conference in December in a bid to deal with members who find themselves on the wrong side of the law.

The provincial leadership summoned Lungisa to Bizana to explain himself following his arrest last week for alleged fraud and money laundering.

“I’m definitely sure the ANC is going to consider the matter. Remember we’ve got what we call an integrity committee. Members who are accused in matters that are in public will be referred (to it),” said provincial ANC spokesman Mlibo Qoboshiyane.

Lungisa and others allegedly defrauded the departments of sport and of arts and culture of R2.5 million. They allegedly pretended to be arranging for US singer R Kelly to perform at the Nelson Mandela Sports Day concert.

Lungisa appeared before the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crime Court on Friday alongside his co-accused Thabo Shogolo, Xolisile Guqaza and Ursula Sali.

The former youth leader’s lawyer, Thabo Kwinana, claimed last week there had been political interference in the case.
