HAPPY Sindane, the “white child from the township” whose story grabbed the world’s attention in 2003 has been written as a one-man play for the stage by award-winning playwright Charles J Fourie.
Sindane walked into the Bronkhorstspruit police station 10 years ago, claimed he was abducted by his white family’s maid at the age of six, and grew up in the Tweefontein township north of Pretoria after being held captive by a Ndebele family. Amidst the strange story stood a shy and confused boy who was looking for his real identity, his parents and love. In April, Sindane’s story came to a sad end when his body being was found lying in a gutter close to the room he rented in the township.
The Cape Theatre Ensemble, producing the production, is holding auditions at the New Africa Theatre on August 27 and 28. They are looking for an experienced male actor aged between 24 and 28 to play Sindane. – Arts writer
