Pretoria - A Tshwane metro police officer is in a serious condition after a collision on the R80 near the Wonderpark shopping complex in which two people were killed and three were injured.
Best Care Ambulance spokesman Xander Loubser said when they arrived at the scene at about 2.30am yesterday they found four occupants trapped in a Toyota Cressida while the driver of a Toyota Rav 4, a metro police officer, was lying outside her vehicle in a petrol spill.
Loubser said it was unclear how the accident happened, but it was suspected that the Toyota Cressida stopped at the traffic light when the Toyota Rav 4 crashed into it from behind.
Loubser said the metro police officer had a broken leg and was taken to the Netcare Akasia hospital for further treatment.
“We had to act fast as we could see smoke coming from the car.”
Tshwane Emergency Services had to remove the trapped passengers of the Toyota Cressida with the Jaws of Life. After the occupants were removed, two were declared dead at the scene while the remaining three were taken to various hospitals.
They had soft tissue injuries, serious facial injuries and a broken leg.
Loubser said it was suspected that one of the victims was the driver of the Cressida while the other was a rear seat passenger.
Metro police spokesman Isaac Mahamba confirmed that one of the injured was a metro police officer.
“She was off duty at the time of the accident. Police are investigating.”
