Pretoria - A 17-year-old girl, Yashika Dinna, is missing from her school and her father believes a mysterious Facebook friend from Malawi could possibly be involved.
Yashika, who was a pupil at Pretoria High School for Girls, disappeared from the school earlier this week.
Her father, Hanuman Dinna, said that except for a few photos of the person posted on Facebook, the family did not know anything about him.
“I cannot really say more about the investigation,” he said.
The family is hoping to trace Yashika via her cellphone signal and police are investigating all clues.
“We have completed the necessary documentation at the police station to have her cellphone signal traced and we are hopeful that it will indicate her location,” her father said.
The Grade 11 teenager from Lynnwood disappeared on Wednesday afternoon while waiting for her father outside the Pretoria High School for Girls in Hatfield.
Police spokeswoman Sergeant Asnath Malatse said Dina’s information had been distributed to the necessary missing persons divisions.
Malatse said Yashika was last seen wearing a navy blue and white school tracksuit with green trim and Converse takkies.
She has long, black, plaited hair, brown eyes, is 1.6 metres tall and weighs 60kg.
Dinna said it was a stressful time for the family, but that they were grateful for the assistance and support from Pretoria High School for Girls.
“They have been extremely supportive and are in regular touch with us. They even volunteered to interview her classmates to see if any of them had any information,” he said.
Andre Snyman from E-Blockwatch said Dinna contacted him on Wednesday afternoon about Yashika’s disappearance.
Snyman said her details would be distributed among the 85 000 E-Blockwatch members across the country.
Malatse said anyone with information should call the Sunnyside police on 012 422 3684
