The family of a man shot dead during violent protests in Evaton in the Vaal want to know who killed him.

Thabang Pitso, 28, died on Tuesday after he was shot during a community protest against Rivers of Living Waters Church leader Stephen Zondo, who has been accused of witchcraft.

Police confirmed Pitso had been shot, but said that while they had been present when the protest escalated on Tuesday night, they had not used any live ammunition.

Shortly before he was shot, Pitso assured his sister on the phone that he was safe.

A concerned Mantoa, Pitso’s sister, had called him after listening to a radio report on the violent protest.

Pitso worked as a security guard at Evaton Plaza. Mantoa said he had just knocked off work and had to pass through the area of the protests on his way home.

“Thabang told me on the phone that the way home had been barricaded, but assured me he would be safe. I called him again a while later but his cellphone just rang,” Mantoa said.

Then she received a frantic call from his wife, Nozipho Nqwati, 25, that Thabang had been shot near the church.

The two women went to Sebokeng Hospital, where doctors told them he had died.

Police

are investigating a murder case.
