“We’re from Virginia, remember,” said Pharrell Williams, top producer and leader of N*E*R*D. “We never thought we would be in South Africa and see such beautiful, beautiful girls of all types. It’s like they grow on trees.”

Pharrell was speaking at the press conference before performing at the Hansa Legends in the Making Tour last night. The concert, which was held at Standard Bank Arena, was attended by 6 000 winners of a Hansa activation exercise as well as celebrities.

The crowd was blown away by N*E*R*D’s brand of psychedelic pop funk meets hard rock. Also performing were top South African artists such as Ntando, DJ Tira, Zuluboy, Kwela Tebza and Malaika.

On Friday night, 17 000 hard rockers and metalheads gathered at the Coca-Cola Dome to watch industrial anarchists Rammstein perform in South Africa for the first time.

The group, from Germany, brought with them a terrifying display of warlike pyrotechnics and a devastatingly loud sound. This, compounded by their avant garde stage theatrics, made for an aural and visual mind trip.

The weekend of international music culminates tonight when more than 100 000 people will attend the U2 concert at FNB Stadium, Soweto. - Sunday Independent
