Workers in the eThekwini Municipality’s Solid Waste Unit (DSW) unit have embarked on an illegal strike.

Municipal spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela confirmed that some workers had gone on strike after residents complained on social media about their rubbish not being collected.

“Yes, we can confirm that some of our DSW employees have embarked on an illegal strike,” he said.

Mayisela said as a result of the illegal strike, the city has given workers an ultimatum.

“If they [striking workers] do not report for duty tomorrow [Tuesday] the city will have no choice but to commence with the internal disciplinary processes that may result in dismissal,” he said.
