MEC of Transport and Human Settlements in KwaZulu-Natal, Siboniso Duma has issued an urgent plea to motorists in the province to ensure they obtain new licence discs and number plates for their vehicles before the end of the month.
The deadline for vehicles to have new number plates is November 30. Duma warned that those who fail to display the new plates on their vehicles after the deadline will be fined.
This comes after the KZN Department of Transport on December 1, 2023, introduced a new licence numbering system for the province as it was running out of new numbers and also to align the province with the national numbering system.
Earlier this year the department said that new registration numbers are automatically generated once the vehicle licence needs to be renewed.
When the motorist purchases a new licence disc, it will have the new registration number.
For those with personalised licence numbers they need purchase and fit blue on white licence plates from a number plate embosser before the deadline.
Duma said: “We are requesting motorists to go to the nearest Registering Authority and fill out the relevant forms and obtain a licence disc with the new KZN numbering. Once this is done, new plates must be purchased and fitted to the vehicle, and the car insurance and tracking company must be informed, among others.
“After the 30th of November, motorists (with vehicles without the new plates) will be fined as the old licence number will be deemed invalid. We are emphasising that driving around with an old number plate after the 30th of November will be in violation of the National Road Traffic Act.”
