The Msunduzi Municipality has expressed outrage over allegations linking Mayor Mzimkhulu Thebolla to the murder of ANC leader Sindiso Magaqa.
The city said it has become aware of allegations that have surfaced online claiming the mayor is to be arrested and has stated that such allegations are defamatory.
The municipality said it strongly condemns and distances itself from the malicious fake news being circulated on social media platforms, alleging the involvement of Mayor Cllr Mzimkhulu Thebolla in a highly sensitive legal matter.
"These claims are completely false, unfounded, and appear to be a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the Mayor and discredit the work of the municipality. We wish to place on record that the Mayor is currently in office, fully engaged in executing the work of government, and has never been implicated in the matter referred to in the fake post,” it said.
The municipality warned that the fabrication and sharing of such insensitive misinformation, especially on issues that involve real trauma for affected families, is not only irresponsible but also deeply disrespectful.
It stated, “We are in the process of investigating the origins of this false post and will be taking appropriate action against those behind the dissemination of this defamatory content. We call upon the public and members of the media to refrain from sharing or amplifying such damaging and unverified information.
“The municipality remains committed to transparency, good governance, and the protection of the integrity of its leadership. We will not allow baseless attacks to distract us from the important work of service delivery and governance,” it concluded.
