While two free fan parks are going to be set up in Durban to ensure that soccer fans can watch this weekend's highly anticipated Nedbank Cup final between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, the ANC Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal stated that more measures are needed to enhance the fans' experience.
The game at the Moses Mabhida Stadium sold out, with 41,000 tickets snatched up in just 90 minutes, leaving thousands of fans to be refunded.
Therefore for the dozens of fans who did not get tickets, the eThekwini Municipality said it is setting up two free fan parks at Albert Park and the Durban Beachfront.
"The two fan parks, which will open at 12:00, are set to bring an unmatched atmosphere, action, and an electrifying mood for the Soweto derby.
"There will be tight security, entertainment, and family-friendly activities during the live broadcast at the fan parks," said the City in a statement.
The ANC Youth League in KZN commended the City's proactive approach, after it had made a call for public viewing areas due to the major interest in the match.
"We commend and appreciate fact that the eThekwini Municipality has taken a proactive approach in addressing the needs of football fans, particularly those from disadvantaged communities.
"It is important to recognise that the demand for such spaces is substantial, given the large number of supporters for both teams. Therefore, we urge the municipality to consider further measures to enhance the fans' experience and safety, such as increased public transport options, additional security personnel, and the establishment of more viewing zones.
"The eThekwini Municipality's efforts reflect a positive direction towards fostering community spirit and ensuring that all fans, regardless of their circumstances, can enjoy the thrill of the game."
