A sustainable design moment transforms everyday packaging into statement accessories.

Okay we love a DIY fashion moment that makes you pause mid-scroll and say… “Wait, is this fashion or a recycling bin audition?”
Fashion designer Rosette Ale is currently serving up exactly that energy after she shared a video showing off her onion bag earrings. Yes. Onion bag. Earrings.
Now, if you grew up in a South African household, you already know the bag in question. That orange net bag that used to hold onions, potatoes or whatever bulk grocery situation your mother came home with.
And let’s be real, it also doubled as a swirlkous (a traditional South African hair-styling technique used by women, particularly within Coloured communities) situation before the fancy satin bonnets and silk wraps entered the chat.
My mom always said it was for the “shine”. I never fully understood it, but somehow that little onion bag had my hair looking extra glossy like it had a secret beauty routine of its own.
So seeing it rebranded into earrings? We have questions. And also respect.
In the video, she proudly explains: “They are very much flexible and scrunchable and I am just loving the vibes.”
Flexible and scrunchable earrings is a sentence we did not have on our 2026 fashion bingo card but here we are.
She also adds that they are perfect for a plain outfit, night out or even a birthday brunch. And that is where things get tricky. Because imagine ordering a mimosa while your earrings look like they just survived a grocery run.
This is giving high fashion meets household storage. It is giving “I saw potential where you saw trash.” It is giving art school assignment but make it runway.
So the question remains. Would you or would you not wear onion bag earrings? Because it is either a bold eco-statement… or your groceries finally made it into your outfit.
