Have you ever fallen into the beauty-product rabbit hole at night and convinced yourself that a novelty device might transform your skin?

That was me, scrolling through online shops late into the evening, tempting fate and my credit card with every algorithm suggestion.

So when a pocket‑sized LED gadget arrived on my doorstep for just R120, I thought: why not give it a go?

Ten days, a few sessions and several compliments later, I decided to dig deeper: do LED face masks and handheld devices actually work - or is it simply high‑tech hype?

My LED experiment

I opted for the red‑light setting on the handheld device, which claims to firm skin and reduce fine lines. With low expectations - especially given the R120 price tag - I began a week’s trial.

To my surprise, my skin looked subtly more plumped after a single use, and by the end of the week, my complexion carried a healthy glow. Friends remarked I looked radiant - healthier, even. Encouraged by the results, I plan to let my tween daughters, struggling with pimples, test it as well.

How LED devices work

LED gadgets, whether masks or handheld wands, use different light wavelengths to gently influence cellular processes.

When skin absorbs light energy, it can boost collagen production, improve blood circulation, calm inflammation and even reduce pigmentation. Each colour penetrates the skin at a different depth, addressing varied concerns:

Red light

Stimulates collagen, enhances elasticity and reduces wrinkles and inflammation. Clinical studies show marked improvements in skin elasticity and texture between six to eight weeks of regular use.

Blue light

Targets acne-causing P. acnes bacteria, making it useful for managing breakouts

Green and yellow light

Can help with hyperpigmentation, redness and illumination of the skin tone

What the experts and studies say

A systematic review affirms that consistent red-light LED therapy can significantly improve fine lines and skin texture over an 8–10‑week period—with daily use showing the best outcome.

So, do they really work?

Yes, LED tools can produce gentle, noticeable improvements, especially with regular use over several weeks. But they’re not miracle devices. Their efficacy depends on:

Device quality - lower‑powered models deliver slower or subtle results.

Consistency - three‑to‑five sessions a week, over at least six to eight weeks.

Personal verdict

My inexpensive faith in the device did pay off: a subtle glow, firmer skin feel and compliments from friends.

Will I dramatically transform my skin? Probably not - but for under R200, the benefits outweighed the investment.
