IN A landmark move for the aviation industry, Kenya Airways has successfully operated its first intra-African flight from Nairobi to Cape Town, using a remarkable 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in accordance with international standards set by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).

This pioneering flight heralds a significant advance in efforts to mitigate the environmental impacts of air travel across the African continent.

The use of SAF, which is derived from Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) feedstocks — such as used cooking oil and other waste materials — can potentially yield a staggering 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional jet fuel when produced and used properly. By implementing SAF attributes verified through global certification schemes that guarantee traceability and transparency, Kenya Airways has carved a new path toward more sustainable air travel.

This historic flight is part of the Sky Team Aviation Challenge 2025 (TAC), themed “Impact,” which seeks to showcase tangible actions that promote sustainability within the aviation sector. The initiatives launched onboard reflect a comprehensive approach to eco-friendliness that goes beyond merely using greener fuel.

Inflight Products: Upcycled blanket bags and headset covers, alongside reusable cutlery to minimise waste.

Catering: Locally sourced Kenyan coffee and tea, replacement of plastic bottles with canned beverages, and adoption of reusable hot drink cups.

Waste Management: Implementation of recycling protocols for onboard waste and the reuse of service items.

People: Engagement of cabin crew to raise passenger awareness about responsible practices.

Hellen Mwariri, Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer of Kenya Airways, remarked, “This flight shows what can be achieved through collaboration and innovation. It’s a step toward practical solutions that reduce our impact while keeping operations efficient.”

Her statement underscores the airline's commitment not just to operational excellence, but to environmental stewardship that aligns with global sustainability goals.

As part of its vision for sustainable aviation, Kenya Airways is also working closely with government agencies, local innovators, and international partners, including IATA, SkyTeam, and the African Airlines Association (AFRAA), to build local SAF production capacity in Kenya by 2026.

This initiative not only aims to bolster the airline’s operational sustainability, but also to stimulate local economies and create new job opportunities in the burgeoning green economy.

With this significant milestone, Kenya Airways is setting a precedent for eco-conscious travel within Africa. The airline's resolve to lead by example could inspire other carriers across the continent to intensify their sustainability efforts — ultimately transforming air travel into a more environmentally responsible industry.
