Spier, located in the heart of Stellenbosch, South Africa, has always been driven by a love for the land. From vineyards to indigenous plant programs, the farm has embraced regenerative practices that ensure sustainability and biodiversity. Now, with the unveiling of the Soil Room, Spier brings its environmental ethos into full view, offering visitors an immersive experience in the world of restoration and ecological balance.
The Soil Room, located beside Spier’s Cowshed Shop, invites guests to step into the farm’s vision of regeneration. It’s not just a space to shop; it’s a living testament to Spier’s ongoing efforts to restore the land, one plant, tree, and ecosystem at a time. “Everything starts with the soil,” says Annebelle Schreuders, Managing Director of Spier Hospitality, and this ethos is brought to life in every detail of the room.
Inside, guests can explore the vibrant world of indigenous plants, locally grown yellowwood trees, and hand-crafted botanical wreaths. The art on display, including botanical ink artworks and Chris van Niekerk’s delicate Ecoskeletons, demonstrates the symbiosis of creativity and conservation, inviting visitors to witness firsthand the delicate balance that sustains life on the farm.
The Soil Room showcases the remarkable individuals behind Spier’s regenerative practices: Wilton Sikhosana, Nursery Manager, who has dedicated over two decades to propagating indigenous species, Orlando Filander, Farm Manager, who views the land as a responsibility, and Angus McIntosh, a regenerative farmer, who emphasizes the importance of soil health. Their work and passion are a cornerstone of Spier’s regenerative approach.
Beyond its visual appeal, The Soil Room is a space for reflection on Spier’s broader environmental efforts, such as their Growing for Good initiative, which nurtures ecosystems, improves soil health, and supports local communities. Last year alone, Spier planted over 17,000 trees, shrubs, and plants to restore vital fynbos and wetlands across the farm.
At Spier, the Soil Room is a living, breathing part of their mission to leave the land better than they found it. A must-see for anyone passionate about sustainability, farming, and the environment, it’s an invitation to connect with the earth in a meaningful, impactful way.
