"Pretty Woman: The Musical" is bringing all the glamour and heart of the classic ‘90s film to the South African stage.
The story we already know and love - a vivacious woman crossing paths with a wealthy businessman - is amplified with a killer score, including powerhouse solos like “Freedom” and “I Can’t Go Back” and showstopping ensemble numbers such as “Welcome to Hollywood” and “Together Forever.”
What makes this musical shine is the collaboration between international and local talent. Songs are by rock superstar Bryan Adams and longtime songwriting partner Jim Vallance, while direction and choreography come from Jerry Mitchell.
South Africa’s cast is equally dazzling: Leah Mari’s Vivian sparkles with charisma, Christopher Jaftha’s Edward oozes charm, and Daniel Conradie’s Philip Stuckey brings the perfect amount of sleaze.
Complementing the cast, the local creative team, including resident director Darren Greeff and musical director Daniel Butcher-Geddes, ensures a production that is meticulously crafted and emotionally engaging.
Beyond the spectacle, the musical digs into themes that are as relatable today as they were in the ‘90s: transformation, love that defies social boundaries and the courage to step into a new life.
It’s as much about the emotional journey as the high-energy dance numbers and soaring melodies. With its mix of local excellence and Broadway-level craftsmanship, "Pretty Woman: The Musical" proves that some stories and songs never go out of style.
