Cape Town Opera's Carmen

The Cape Town Opera is bringing one of the world’s most beloved productions to the Mother City this week.

In this play, Bizet’s “Carmen” will be under the direction of Steven Stead with a set design by Greg King.

In addition conductor Tim Murray will also be at the helm of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, leading an ensemble of singers, dancers and orchestra.

Set against the turbulent backdrop of the Spanish Civil War, it takes place from 1936–1939 and features themes of power, desire and defiance.

The show centres around Carmen, a fiercely independent factory worker, who falls in love with soldier Don José and turns his life upside down. After seducing him into helping her escape arrest, José’s career and moral compass unravel, drawing him into the dangerous world of smugglers.

When: Tuesday, May 19 to May 31. Show times differ.

Rise ’76: The Story of June 16th

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Youth Uprisings, this play seeks to bring this story to the stage.

It is directed by two-time Fleur du Cap award-winning playwright-director Tiisetso Mashifane wa Noni and it focuses on a  community on the brink, as students, teachers and families confront the devastating implications of Afrikaans being imposed as a medium of instruction.

The play draws on real testimonies and archival material to present a fictionalised version of the reimagining of June 16 as a lived, intimate experience.
