The Mseleku family, Mzansi’s beloved polygamous household, is set to return to screens in February with Season 9 of “Uthando neS’thembu”.
Tensions are notably high as Season 9 begins. The preceding special, “#Uncut: Uthando neS’thembu”, offered viewers a behind-the-scenes look with exclusive, never-before-seen footage that revealed the beginnings of a serious breakdown within the family.
The four wives—MaCele, MaYeni, MaNgwabe, and MaKhumalo—are still grappling with individual marital struggles. A central issue remains Musa Mseleku’s addition of MaKhwela (or ‘Number 5’) to the family, a move some are yet to accept.
The season will explore how MaKhwela is managing this ongoing rejection and how long she can endure the situation.
During season eight, MaKhwela received a frosty welcome. The wives have always been vocal about not wanting to meet the new wife.
Mseleku introduced wife number 5 during an ancestral ceremony, and the move did not sit well with the other wives, who previously expressed not wanting to meet the new wife. 25-year-old Khwela and Musa have welcomed their first child together, which is his 11th child.
The Mseleku family has become a reality TV staple in South Africa and many are ready to catch up on all that has been happening in eMzumbe.
The practice of isithembu (polygamy) within the Mseleku family, once a symbol of unity and tradition, appears to be in serious jeopardy. The central question remains: can Musa Mseleku hold the union together, or are the foundations of this marriage finally coming undone?
The new season premieres on Wednesday, February 4 at 20:00, and will air twice weekly, every Wednesday and Thursday, on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161).
