Romcoms are even more of a hit this time of the year. With everyone in high spirits, watching films or TV shows that match that heart-warming energy is almost an unspoken rule.

Of course, streaming platforms are cognisant of this reality, which is why they roll out an attention-grabbing festive slate.

Local content is always a winner with viewers, which is why “Love and Wine” was trending when it recently debuted on Netflix.

Set in picturesque Cape Town, including the Winelands, the storyline resonates with Mzansi as it draws parallels between the haves and have-nots while also unpacking romances where opposites are drawn together.

At the heart of the story is Ovee (Ntobeko Sishi), the Playboy son of wealthy billionaire Mr Sityebi (Bongile Mantsai). While he doesn’t have a social media footprint, he is known for his wild partying and one-night stands.

However, his father wants him to take on a more hands-on role in the family wine empire.

Meanwhile, his best friend and driver, Nathi (Thandolwethu Zondi), is encouraged by his mother, who is a domestic worker for the family, to make something more of his life.

As such, Nathi and Ovee sign up for an internship at the winery, with one catch.

Ovee swaps identities with Nathi to prove he can stand on his own feet without his father's money, to show his father his willingness to start from the bottom and to impress Amahle (Masali Baduza), a doctor who has caught his eye at a party.

What could go wrong, right? Well, it’s not easy maintaining a lie. While Nathi embraces life in Ovee’s shoes, Ovee has to work harder to prove himself on several fronts.

Although Amahle, who detests entitled rich people, doesn’t believe in love, she falls for the charming Ovee. However, her work colleague (played by Bohang Moeko) has also taken a shine to her, and he sabotages Ovee at every chance he gets.

Always awkward around the ladies, Nathi catches the eye of the winery’s no-nonsense manager, Lena (Thando Thabethe).

The confusion from the switched identities lends itself to hilarious moments, especially with Desmond Dube as the tardy butler.

This delightful rom-com leans heavily into heartfelt moments, especially during the climax. Viewers will revel in the comic chaos in between. A movie that is pure escapism, thanks to its winning formula, adroit direction and solid cast.

Rating: *** solid and enjoyable, though not groundbreaking.
