Showmax is set to launch a new original series "Slay Queens", that dives deep into the lives behind the label.

The new documentary series has divided audiences, with some expressing reservations about the topic, calling it “unnecessary”

Author and media personality Jackie Phamotse, a self-proclaimed former slay queen, brings her lived experience to the conversation on the documentary. Her bestselling book "Bare" explores vulnerability, societal pressure and the consequences of chasing the high life.

Phamotse taking to her Instagram stories hit back at the comments that are not in favour of the series and highlighted it as being a true reflection of how people see themselves.

“Nothing matters in your eyes, the deaths of all these kids and women mean nothing to you. You are so fooled by the title and have written off the actual story. You have not seen anything! You don’t see what’s happening to your sisters and brothers? Kids and friends?”

Phamotse on “Slay Queens” reflects on the emotional and social toll of living in the spotlight, providing audiences with a candid, nuanced understanding of what it means to walk away from a persona that’s glamorous on the surface but demanding underneath.

“Documentaries that highlight social ills will always be necessary. Especially in this economic crisis and crime infested country. This documentary doesn’t glorify a particular lifestyle, we have crafted a world ruled by crime and injustices. We have told a brilliant story from most sides.

“Let not the truth irritate you to a point of oblivion. Wait for the show to air and only then certain things will make sense. Just watching a trailer is not enough.”

“Slay Queens” is executive produced by Vusi Zion, whose creative collective, Kaimal Pictures, was also behind the Showmax hit “Soft Life”.

The documentary features both slay queens and ballers telling their stories in their own words, from DJ and influencer Cyan Boujee, multi-award-winning amapiano star Mr JazziQ and anthropologist and author of “The Soft Life: Love, Choice and Modern Dating” Lebo Masango.
