South African Afro-pop duo Blaq Diamond, which is made up of Ndumiso Mdletshe, popularly known as Ndu Browns, and Sphelele Dunywa, also known as Danya Devs, have announced the release of their individual projects, stirring curiosity among fans about the future of the group.

Despite the buzz, both artists have reassured their audience that Blaq Diamond is still very much active, with plans to continue creating music together.

Devs is set to release his latest single, “1 Million”, on Thursday, August 21.

This marks his second solo venture, following the release of “Asambe” in May.

The track, described as a soulful love song, showcases a tender side of Devs’ artistry, blending smooth melodies with heartfelt lyrics dedicated to someone who has captured his heart.

Meanwhile, Browns is preparing to release his debut solo single, timed to coincide with his birthday on September 6.

Excited about the upcoming release, he shared on Instagram, “Truly can’t wait to share this masterpiece I’m cooking. First single is dropping on my birthday.”

Amid speculation of a potential split, Devs reassured fans on TikTok that their solo projects do not indicate a breakup.

He emphasised that these ventures are an exploration of personal artistry and that Blaq Diamond will continue to produce collaborative music, which remains a cornerstone of their career.

Hailing from Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal, Blaq Diamond has firmly established itself as a leading force in the South African music scene.

Their debut album, “Inqola”, received critical acclaim, while their single “Ibhanoyi” earned them the Record of the Year award at the South African Music Awards (Samas) in 2020.

Their sophomore album, “Umuthi”, further strengthened their reputation, featuring collaborations with renowned artists such as Sjava and Cici.

Across these albums, the duo tells stories of love, triumph, disappointment, heartbreak, gratitude and other deeply relatable experiences.

Their music, while experimental at times, avoids overwhelming listeners with overly dramatic production. According to the duo, they aim to heal listeners - hence the title of their 2019 album "Umuthi".

In IsiZulu, the word umuthi means “medicine.”

Blaq Diamond is also the driving force behind Umuthi Records, a label that nurtures rising talent in SA.

Home to artists such as Mawelele and Makhosi SA, Umuthi Records reflects the duo’s commitment to supporting the next generation of musicians while maintaining a sound that resonates with authenticity and cultural pride.
