The world of South African rugby is buzzing with excitement as acclaimed musicians Francois van Coke and Robbie Wessels unveil their much-anticipated rugby anthem “Bokbefok”.

Coinciding perfectly with the Springboks' clash against the Barbarians at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town for the Qatar Airways Cup this Saturday, June 28, the song promises to energise fans and enhance the electric atmosphere surrounding this notable fixture.

In a playful exchange that set the stage for the anthem's release, Wessels had been teasing Van Coke on social media with hints of a boxing match, only for fans to discover that the real heavyweight contest would be fought in the musical arena.

The result is a spirited rugby anthem sure to resonate deeply with supporters.

"BOKBEFOK is now available everywhere," the duo proclaimed on Instagram, embracing the anticipation of rugby aficionados and music lovers alike.

The roots of “Bokbefok” trace back to a collaborative performance of the classic track 'Leeuloop' during the iconic Afrikaans music festival Liefde By die Dam.

Both artists have shared the stage multiple times, forging mutual respect and fan following. Their shared passion for rugby provided the natural momentum to create an anthem that embodies the zeal of South African fans.

“Both of us are huge rugby fans,” Van Coke explained. “It turned out to be a rugby song.”

Given their shared passion for rugby, the decision to pen a rugby anthem together was a natural progression.

Van Coke recalled the moment he embraced Wessels’ title suggestion, “Bokbefok”. “I’m down with the title because I’m in a band called Fokofpolisiekar. But are you ready?” he asked, to which Wessels confidently retorted, “I’m ready.”

Wessels passionately believes that “Bokbefok” stands as a landmark achievement in rugby music:

“If you take the song ‘Hie’ Kommie Bokke’ and you multiply it with ‘Die Bloubul’ song and you multiply it with ‘We Are the Champions’, you are still not even close to the ‘biggest rugby song of all time’ that has just arrived.”

Fans' reactions to the release have been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressions of delight flooding social media.

Comments include, “The collab we didn't realise we needed,” and “Damn!! No, what can the goats do with the release other than win this weekend!”

Another chimed in, “Omg, the World Cup won't be back until 2027, boys ... You're warming us up early.”

This outpouring of support highlights the value of the collaboration and its potential impact as the Springboks prepare for their crucial match.

As the Springboks prepare for their clash against the Barbarians, “Bokbefok” could very well serve as the soundtrack to what many hope will be a resounding victory.

With its infectious energy and relatable themes, the anthem not only celebrates the national team's prowess but also fosters a thrilling camaraderie among supporters - an integral element of South African rugby culture.
