In the vibrant landscape of South African music, a new star is rapidly gaining attention, illuminating the industry with a unique sound and a compelling story that resonates with both joy and sorrow.
Jabulani Majola, known by his stage name Jabulile, hails from the historic city of Pietermaritzburg, where life began for him under challenging circumstances. Just three days after his birth, Jabulile's mother disappeared, leaving him to find his way as a child in a Christian Children's Home in Greytown.
IOL spoke to Majola regarding his love of music, his background, and his current endeavours.
''I am not particularly good at coming up with or selecting stage names. I recall creating the worst stage names when I was a rapper in high school. Since Jabulile Majola is the name of my biological mother, I went with it. I don't know anything more about my biological mother than that.''
Despite these early adversities, Jabulile's journey has taken a remarkable turn. Now based in Cape Town, he has emerged as a riveting force within the music scene, known for his stirring tracks such as ''Woza Mntana'' and an acoustic version of “Amagugu”.
''I see myself more of a writer, stories open windows to life and share lived experiences, with the genre that I do. It is classified as African Folk because of its fragile, archaic storytelling style, raw, honest vocals, and relatively simple acoustic guitar elements.''
In an era where genuine connection can often seem elusive, South African artist Majola has released a poignant new single titled "Isineke". The song encapsulates the trials and triumphs of relationships strained by misunderstanding. Featuring the emotive vocals of rising star Thando Zide, it confronts the complexities of communication while offering a pathway back to love and understanding.
Majola describes ''Isineke'' as a "reflection on the distance and lack of understanding that causes strain between two people". The track urges listeners to return to relationship fundamentals by communicating with patience and love while encouraging an exploration of personal pain to forge a way forward together. It speaks not only to the emotional struggles faced by couples but also resonates with anyone who has ever grappled with miscommunication.
''It was a difficult collaboration as I have not met Thando Zide in person. Thanks to technology, it makes things much easier and helps with collaboration.''
Despite the physical distance separating Majola and Zide during the creation of this collaboration, their synergy shines through with remarkable intimacy. Their dedication to emotive storytelling allows them to engage in what feels like a deep, genuine conversation.
"It’s as if they are right there in the same room, speaking directly to one another," says Majola. This heartfelt connection adds a rich layer to ''Isineke'', transforming it into a vulnerable exploration of love.
''Isineke'' serves as an introduction to Majola's much-anticipated debut solo EP, ''Isitifiketi'', which delves into themes of identity and self-discovery. The EP is a raw and honest reflection of his upbringing in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands, where the art of storytelling significantly shaped his understanding of the world around him. With ''Isitifiketi'', Majola invites listeners to accompany him on this journey of exploration, self-reflection, and growth.
