American content creator Natalie Shine and actor Savannah DesOrmeaux recently stirred the pot on their podcast when they tackled the story of South African athlete Oscar Pistorius.
Their discussion ranged from his para-athlete career to the murder case that made headlines worldwide.
“Who is this guy? Oscar Pistorius… looks like he’s committed a crime,” DesOrmeaux said, clearly not holding back. “He notoriously went to jail for killing his girlfriend in South Africa… or Australia? Can’t remember which.”
Shine chimed in: “You know, I was gonna guess that the man looks like he’s killed someone.” And just like that, the conversation spiralled into the murky waters of Pistorius’ trial.
They also touched on his career, noting the extraordinary feat of competing as a para-athlete against able-bodied competitors. Their faces looked like they’d just seen a ghost when this point came up, a mix of awe and disbelief at the hurdles he overcame on the track.
Things got even stranger when the podcast brought up the infamous “home intruder” story.
“Apparently, there was a home intruder, and she (Rita Greyling) went to try and find them, and then he got out of bed and grabbed his gun. He was only on his nubs and was running around trying to find the intruder,” the host explained.
Cue the comments section, which quickly corrected them. First correction: he is from South Africa, not Australia.
And yes, South Africans often get confused with Aussies, maybe because we speak English, like beaches, or just have that “sunny Southern Hemisphere vibe,” but trust us, the comparison is wildly off.
One user wrote: “He’s from South Africa. Australia has a famous athlete, Oscar, too, but he’s a much nicer guy!”
Then, South African sports journalist Elma Smit weighed in: “I worked on this trial, and if you want my take on this: 100% killed her. Lived in a plush access-controlled estate, on the top floor of the house, shot multiple times through a locked toilet cubicle door. Now dating a girl who has an uncanny resemblance to the woman he killed.”
Adding more clarity, journalist and KFM radio news anchor Carryn-Ann Nel wrote: “Firstly, this happened in South Africa, not Australia. I covered this trial. There was never an intruder.
Court evidence showed that she was in the bathroom, presumably to urinate, and he shot at the door multiple times. There was a suggestion he must have known it was her, which he denied, of course.”
The podcast may have started as a casual chat, but it quickly became a masterclass in “don’t mix up continents and crimes.”
While Shine and DesOrmeaux brought curiosity (and some questionable guesses), South Africans in the comments set the record straight.
